Fall Homeowner Checklist

Exterior & Structural

☐ Clean gutters and downspouts — remove leaves and debris so water flows away from your foundation
☐ Inspect roof and shingles — look for lifts, cracks, or damage
☐ Trim tree limbs & bushes near your roof or siding to prevent damage
☐ Inspect foundation & siding for cracks, gaps, or wear to seal before winter
☐ Power wash siding or brick to remove mildew, pollen, and debris
☐ Check walkways, driveways, and patios for cracks or damage; repair before they worsen
☐ Seal or caulk gaps around windows, doors, and exterior walls to reduce air infiltration
☐ Clean dryer vent and exhaust to reduce fire risk and improve dryer efficiency
☐ Spray off the outside condenser / AC unit — clear leaves, dust, debris around grates and coils

HVAC, Airflow & Systems

☐ Schedule HVAC tune‑up — check for efficiency, leaks, refrigerant, and general health
☐ Replace air filters — start fall fresh with a clean filter
☐ Inspect ductwork for dust, gaps, or disconnected runs
☐ Reverse ceiling fans (if applicable) to push warm air down
☐ Check thermostat calibration or replace with programmable/smart if needed

Indoor Tasks & Safety

☐ Test smoke detectors and CO detectors — replace batteries if older than 6 months
☐ Inspect fireplace, chimney, or woodstove (if you have one) for blockages or damage
☐ Inspect plumbing lines — check under sinks, water heater, and pipe joints for drips or leaks
☐ Drain water heater to remove sediment buildup
☐ Check attic insulation & ventilation — ensure heat and moisture can escape
☐ Inspect windows & doors for leaks or broken seals, repair if needed
☐ Deep clean kitchen & appliances — oven, refrigerator coils, range hood
☐ Clean indoor vents, baseboards, and dust-prone surfaces

Yard & Landscape / Seasonal Prep

☐ Rake leaves and debris — prevent smothering your lawn and clogging drains
☐ Aerate lawn (if needed) and fertilize for root strength
☐ Drain and remove garden hoses — shut off outdoor faucet lines if possible
☐ Store or cover outdoor furniture and grill
☐ Check irrigation / sprinkler systems — flush lines or winterize them
☐ Mulch garden beds to protect roots during cooler weather
☐ Check exterior lighting, motion sensors, & fixtures for proper function
